ABSTRACT

Agung Nugroho Catur Saputro, Lina Mahardiani, and Yuliesta Arofati. SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CHITOSAN MODIFIED CARBOXYMETHYL (CS-MCM) FROM CRAB SHELL WASTE (Scylla serrata). Colloquium. Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. April 2010.

This research aims to: 1) preparate chitosan from crab shell waste through deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation process, 2) Modify chitosan to be Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM) by using monochloroacetic acid, 3) Know the characteristics of chitosan and Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM) including water content, ash content, nitrogen content, viskosity, and the degree of deacetylation.

This research uses experiment method. The first step is preparing chitosan through deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation process. The second step is synthesizing chitosan to be Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM). The third step is characterizing chitosan and Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM) to determine the qualities of chitosan including water content, ash content, nitrogen content, viskosity, and the degree of deacetylation. Then, analyzing function group with FTIR spectroscopy.

The result of this research shows that: 1) Crab shell waste (Scylla serrata) can be used as raw materials to prepare chitosan through deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation process, 2) Chitosan can be modified as Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM) by using monochloroacetic acid, 3) Characterization of chitosan and Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM) show that water content, ash content, nitrogen content, and the degree of deacetylation CS-MCM are more than chitosan, whereas the value of CS-MCM viscosity is less than chitosan.

Keywords : crab shell, chitosan, monochloroacetic acid, Chitosan Modified Carboxymethyl (CS-MCM).-MCM).
